InfographicOpioid Abuse and Overdose: An Illinois Epidemic

The opioid epidemic in Illinois is a serious and ongoing public health crisis. Misuse of opioids has caused thousands of overdoses, deaths, and associated public health consequences such as drug addiction and increased rates of infectious diseases. In 2020 alone, 2,944 overdose fatalities occurred in Illinois – that’s an average of 8 residents per day! The highest number of opioid-related deaths occurred among non-Hispanic white individuals (1,530), while the highest fatality rate was among non-Hispanic Blacks (55.3 per 100,000).

These numbers are alarming and speak to the urgency with which we must address this growing problem. Prevention efforts must include education on drug misuse dangers and treatment options for those affected by drug addiction. It is also important to reduce drug access and create more resources and support for those struggling with drug addiction. Together, we can help fight the opioid epidemic and bring these numbers down.

How Illinois is Addressing the Epidemic

The state of Illinois has taken steps toward addressing the opioid epidemic, including expanding access to naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdose. Illinois also provides funding for drug treatment programs and has implemented stricter prescribing laws to help curb drug misuse. Additionally, the state is working with healthcare providers and local communities in order to provide resources to those in need.

To further reduce opioid fatalities, Illinois created a Public Health Opioid Response Program that helps provide access to substance use treatment services, harm reduction programs, and other related services. The goal of this program is to increase the availability of naloxone while reducing the stigma associated with drug addiction and improving access to drug treatment services.

If you or a loved one are affected by drug addiction, there are many programs available to help. There are many addiction treatment options throughout Illinois and the country.
