GeneralShould You Renew Your Gym Membership?

Gym memberships run out after a while, at which point gym membership owners need to decide whether or not to continue with the plan. For some, that decision is simple – either they never use the membership and are finally glad to be free, or they love going to the gym and the thought of quitting seems ridiculous.

What about those that sit somewhere in the middle, though? If you’re unsure if you should renew your gym membership, below are some questions to ask yourself before you go ahead and do it.

Can You Workout Elsewhere?

If working out in the gym is your only real option for training, then renewing is the best option. However, if you can work out elsewhere, consider saving your cash.

One option is working out from home in a home gym. It’s not as hard to set up as you might imagine! Gym floor mats are the best place to start, as even a single mat can open up many possibilities for home workouts. From there, you could upgrade to gym flooring and invest in gym equipment like a treadmill, leg press, or rowing machine. For many people, the option of working out from home is a much more enticing one.

Do You Have a Good Track Record?

Next, consider how many times you’ve been to the gym in the past year. If you’ve paid for a membership for twelve months and only been a handful of times, it’s time to try working out elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’ve made the most of your gym membership and gotten fit in the process, you shouldn’t quit now!

Do You Enjoy Going to the Gym?

It’s a simple question, but it’s important – do you enjoy going to the gym? If the answer is yes, you should probably renew your membership. On the other hand, if the answer is no, there is little point in wasting more of your time doing exercise you don’t enjoy! After all, there’s a form of exercise out there for everyone.

Can You Afford it?

Of course, you should only renew a gym membership if you can genuinely afford it. If it’s a little too pricey, but you still want to go to the gym, see if they have any cheaper options, such as the gym without the swimming pool.

Renewing Your Gym Membership: The Pros and Cons

Are you still unsure whether you should renew your membership or let it run out? These pros and cons may help you make your decision.

Pros:

  • The gym provides a community feel
  • The gym is a motivator
  • Most gyms have extra amenities

Cons:

  • It can be expensive
  • Some gym memberships mean you’re tied down
  • You have to share the equipment

Whether or not to renew a gym membership is personal – it depends on your goals, priorities, and how much use you’ll get out of it. If you think you might benefit from working out at home instead, consider saving the cash and the travel time by letting the membership run out.
