GeneralHow Long Should Your Hair Be For A Brazilian Wax?

Personal care and beauty is big business these days. According to Statista, this industry is growing rapidly.

The beauty and personal care sector will have a revenue of $564 billion globally in 2022.

This covers a number of areas including cosmetics, fragrances, and skincare. It also covers hair removal treatments, such as waxing.

Perhaps the most famous waxing treatment known today is the Brazilian.

Even though the Brazilian wax has been around for decades, and is used by women in all walks of life, there can be some apprehension about getting one.

One concern that often arises is, how long should the client’s hair be?

If you are new to the world of Brazilian waxes, then carry on below to find out more about them, and how you should approach one.

What is a Brazilian wax?

The Brazilian wax first appeared in 1987, when Janea Padilha perfected the technique in her aunt’s beauty salon.

Along with her six sisters, Padilha operates the famous J. Sisters Salon in New York, where celebrity clients come for their Brazilians from the master.

But what is a Brazilian wax?

Well, the easiest way to describe it is possibly to say that this form of waxing is intended to remove all, or very nearly all, pubic hair. Sometimes a small strip of hair may be left at the front.

This is achieved through muslin strips covered in hot wax and can be painful.

What length should you grow your hair before having a Brazilian wax?

When going for your first Brazilian, it is normal to have some questions. Many women are nervous too. After all, it is an intimate procedure.

A professionally trained technician will put you at ease when you have your first Brazilian though. They are used to seeing first-time clients, as well as regulars.

You can make the process far more comfortable by having the right length of hair when you go for your session.

Ideally, your hair would be at least 1/4 of an inch minimum, and no longer than 1/2 an inch long.

There are valid reasons for this.

What happens if your hair is too long, or too short?

Although you may be desperate to get a new bikini wax for your holiday, if the hair is too short then it can’t happen.

If the hair is too short

If the hair is shorter than 1/4 inch then the hair won’t stick to the wax properly. This means that you could have broken hairs, some that can’t be removed, and an overall poor result.

Broken hairs left behind may also result in ingrown hairs, which can lead to infection and inflammation.

If the hair is too long

If the hair is too long, it simply can’t be waxed. The process of waxing doesn’t suit hair over 1/2 inch.

If your hair is too long then your technician may trim it for you before you get waxed. However, many people prefer to trim themselves before attending their appointment.

You can also make the session smoother by exfoliating. Do this a day, or maybe two, before the session. This will assist the wax to stick to the hair and not the skin. Avoid exfoliating on the day though, as it could make the skin more sensitive.

The upsides of having a Brazilian wax

It may be true that having hair is natural, but for many, it isn’t attractive to have hair in certain areas. People often seek out ways to look glamorous on a budget, and waxing is one of them.

It became fashionable perhaps in the late eighties and the nineties for full body hair removal. For many, it is aesthetically pleasing to be hair-free.

Besides the visual factor, there are some other benefits to having a Brazilian.

Many women say that the hair takes longer to grow back as sessions are repeated. Initially, it could take 4 weeks for the hair to return to the 1/4 inch length. After a few appointments though, it can take 5 or 6 weeks to get to this length again.

The hair also grows back softer, and some say thinner too. Many women say that due to this the sessions become less painful and more comfortable, and less frequent.

Waxing has longer-lasting results than shaving and is less painful. You are less likely to suffer from bumps and irritation from a Brazilian than from shaving.

Summary

There are other options to having a Brazilian. Shaving is probably the most common method used but comes with many negatives. Shaving takes time, needs to be repeated often, and can cause irritation.

Then there is laser hair removal. There are a number of pros and cons to laser hair removal, and one of these is the cost.

The Brazilian wax has the edge in some ways. Although it isn’t a permanent hair removal solution, it is cheaper than laser, and longer-lasting than shaving.

The results are aesthetically pleasing, and smooth. Just make sure your hair is not too short, or too long when you have your appointment.
