General3 Most Common Airborne Pathogens In The World

Diseases are common and frequent everywhere in the world. However, to best protect against diseases, we need to know how they are spread and transmitted. If an illness is spread by blood, specific precautionary measures can be taken to avoid contact with a person’s bodily fluids, organs, or HIV-infected blood.

However, if diseases are spread by other methods, like talking or breathing, the illness suddenly becomes harder and harder to diagnose and contain. Take Covid-19, for example – the virus is spread by saliva, speaking, coughing, and contact with another person. Before we were mandated to wear masks, the disease was spreading rapidly like fire.

Since everyone is walking around, talking to each other, shaking hands, and sneezing in public, very common illnesses and diseases can arrive from social interactions.

3 most common airborne pathogens

An airborne pathogen is a disease that is caused by a microorganism spread and transmitted via the air. Various airborne illnesses cause a wide range of problems in the human body, such as viruses, fungi, and bacteria. The most common causes of getting a bacterial or viral infection include sneezing, coughing, dust inhalation, and inhaling aerosol.

Infected particles can travel long distances, making it possible for someone to sneeze in the other room and for you to catch the disease. However, as the distance increases, the chance of infection inversely decreases, putting those closest to the infected person most at risk.

 Cold

One of the most common airborne pathogens in the world is the common cold. Although this is arguably the most milk out of all of the diseases on this list, it is also ubiquitous, affecting millions of people in the United States alone – each year.

Children tend to get colds more frequently, with the older population also suffering worse symptoms from the common cold. Ensure that you stay home from work and don’t spread the virus if you notice any symptoms, like headache, sore throat, or fever.

 Influenza

Slightly more severe than the common cold, influenza is an extremely easily spread airborne pathogen that can quickly spread between those in school or work. Since you typically are contagious before having symptoms, you may unknowingly spread this virus to others without being aware of your illness.

The flu remains contagious for 5-7 days, so you should stay at home during the onset of symptoms and monitor your progress. The most common flu symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, tiredness, fatigue, body aches, and lack of appetite.

 Covid-19

Although this disease is relatively new, the impact it has had on the world is undeniable. A rapidly spreading disease, covid-19, is responsible for millions of infections and thousands of deaths worldwide after appearing in the spring of 2020.

Conclusion

Airborne pathogens are a quick and easy way to spread disease and illness – and sometimes do it unknowingly. Since it is so quick and easy to spread disease via talking, coughing, or sneezing in public places, those who have symptoms should remain home and socially distanced for the duration of their illness.
