General10 Self Storage Items You Can Use For Plant Decor

Discover 10 items you probably have in your self storage unit that can be used for plant decor.

The plant decor trend is stronger than ever, as houseplants and all things leaf-print dominate the modern home, be it a minimalist or traditional ethic you are looking for. One of the best parts of plant decor is that it can be done incredibly cheaply, compared to some trends. You can buy one plant and make endless others by propagating. You can get plants for free from online marketplaces. You can also buy soft furnishings in pastel tones and leaf prints for a few pounds, in certain shops.

To help you embrace the plant decor trend for even less money, we can help. You don’t need to pay £25 for a tiny plant stand, or £50 for a posh terrarium. Here are 10 items you probably have in your cheap self storage unit (find out more about these here) that can be used for plant decor:

1. Jars (terrarium and propagation)

Any jars with a lid can be used as a terrarium. Don’t have a lid? You can place cling film around the opening and tighten it with some string or a hair band to replicate a lid. Alternatively, for smaller jars like salsa jars or olive jars, these make excellent propagation containers.

2. Shoe racks

Shoe racks are an amazing way to shelve plants whilst also ensuring that the furniture remains minimal. Layering and using different sized pots at different heights is key to making plant decor look good. A simple two tier shoe rack can instantly provide that multi-layer look for your plants.

3. Ceramic pots

A pot that goes around a plastic nursery pot enhances the aesthetic of the plant and it can be anything you like. An old teapot, coffee jar, mug – whatever takes your fancy. You could also plant directly into the pot if you like, but take care to add drainage and water less often.

4. Low tables

Any low table such as a lap table to use in bed, or a low coffee table, can serve as a great plant stand for multiple plants.

5. Bookshelves

Bookshelves are great plant display units when you want more of a ‘living wall’ look. If you can, remove the back so the light is able to shine through. This not only looks more aesthetically pleasing, but it allows the plant to get light coverage on more of its leaves.

6. Hanging fruit baskets

Wire multi-tier fruit baskets are something many of us have in junk boxes in cheap self storage. They work well to hold the pots of hanging plants like pothos and philodendron and come with a handy hook already, so you can quickly put them up and use them.

7. Wooden crates

Old fruit crates, or slatted wooden boxes are wonderful plant organisers. They group plants together – ideally different sized plants – and make the overall look more cohesive. You can also turn the crate over to make a quick plant stand.

8. Tea trays

Deep tea trays are wonderful in plant decor, especially in neutral materials and colours. A deep bamboo tray, for example, can hold multiple pots and maybe even a bright framed picture to add a different shape.

9. Stools

Stools, especially flat topped stools, are great as plant holders. Plant holders on legs can be really expensive, so repurposing grannies old woven footstool is a great way to achieve this key plant decor look cheaply.

10. Placemats

Placemats are an excellent way to add colour and texture to your plant decor look. A simple straw or cork placemat under a plant pot instantly makes it look purposeful. A pretty pink woven placemat can be put on a slatted rack or shelf so you can then put a plant on it, in a way that looks gorgeous.

The 10 ideas above can help you to achieve gorgeous plant decor without paying anything more than a quick visit to your cheap self storage unit.
