GeneralWhat to Know About Beard Transplants

Beard growth may be a problem for some people. The facial hair may grow unevenly and regularly or may not grow at all. Therefore, even if you avoid using the razor and want to just watch the facial hair grow via the natural growth pattern and cycles, it may not be possible due to genetic and other causes. However, whether it is patchy stubble or a complete absence of beard on the face, the beard transplant procedure can help you overcome the issue and have normal beard growth.

Beard Transplantation: A Safe and Effective Clinical Procedure

Transplanting the own hair of the patient for the receding hairlines on the scalp and for overcoming baldness is a well-known clinical procedure now. When healthy hair follicles are used for beard transplantation, it is a similar procedure. However, the doctor will only recommend beard transplantation after the clinical evaluation.

Beard Transplantation Process

During beard transplantation, hair may be obtained from any body part and implanted wherever the patient wants the beard to grow (including the jawline). For beard transplantation, there are two approaches and medical techniques available.

FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction: during FUE, the entire follicular units are obtained from one part and region of the body, which is also called the donor area. This harvest is less painful. It is the reason the FUE procedure is more common and popular.

FUT or Follicular Unit Transplantation: the method involves obtaining the tissues from the scalp and the back of the head.

Both processes are effective and gather a maximum of 5000 hair follicles. It is about half of the entire head. The hair grafts thus obtained are implanted on the face. Below is the step-by-step procedure of hair graft transplantation for beard growth.

Harvesting

The surgeon will first shave and bald a section of the head/scalp to have a clear view of the hair follicles for both the FUE and FUT procedures. Those who are undergoing the process are also given a local anesthetic so that they do not feel any kind of pain. Therefore, whether it is FUE or FUT, there are no painful sensations.

Implantation

Harvesting of the hair follicles and tissues is the first part of the beard transplantation process. In the next stage, the surgeon will have to inject a local anesthetic into the facial region, as the hair follicles must be established at their new home. Each of the follicles is then implanted carefully into the facial region. The implantation may follow the wishes of the patient and the way the doctor approved the surgery before commencing it.

Recovery

After the surgery is complete, a day of rest may be required. Tiny crusts may start to appear at the implanted follicles. However, these crusts will fall and get removed on their own sometimes. In most cases, people can start to shave/trim regularly and normally within a maximum of ten days of the hair and beard implantation surgery. Sometimes the newly planted beard hair may fall off in around three weeks. You should not be worried about it, as new hair will replace the fallen hair briefly, and you will have a normal beard again.

The implanted hair follicles get entirely settled within three months. In some cases, the duration may stretch to four months. The beard transplantation will be termed as successful if you find your beard to have healthy and normal hair in around nine months. Such a beard will appear as if it has existed for a long time.

Hair Growth on Scalp’s Back

As stated, beard hair is obtained from the back of the head region. Therefore, the patient must have normal and adequate hair growth in this body region. The hair in this part of the scalp is present even when it has fallen from the topmost scalp section. While the scalp has sufficient hair for beard implantation, there are alternative measures and techniques available when it cannot supply enough hair for transplantation.

Conclusion

Beard transplantation is an entirely safe and effective procedure for most people. Obtaining healthy hair follicles for transplantation is easy, and the donor is mostly the patient themselves.
