GeneralTypes of Slippers

 Albert slipper

This slipper was named after the husband of Queen Victoria. The Albert slipper was designed during the early 1800s to be worn at dinner parties with smoking jackets. These monogrammed or embroidered slippers were originally made out of silk or velvet, and helped to protect the expensive rugs in the country’s gentry homes.

Modern Albert slippers are the most elegant form of house shoes that a man can own. Usually, they are made out of leather or velvet. Featuring a soft leather sole and high back, they are the ultimate in style and comfort for men who work from home occasionally, or who host lavish parties where velvet jackets and smart outfits are commonly found. Orthotic slippers can support your feet while keeping them comfortable.

Moccasin slipper

The general term moccasin refers to any type of Native American hand-sewn footwear. This type of footwear was traditionally made out of deer hide and decorated with distinct tribal designs. Different construction techniques were used by various tribes that could be identified just by their footwear.

Moccasin slippers these days are made out of soft suede and come with a line of puckered stitches over the toe. With lined or padded insoles along with a high back, they are warm and comfortable even during the year’s coldest months. Select a pair that has hard-wearing rubber soles so you can go out to pick up the newspaper or grab some firewood without having to put on your outside shoes.

Indoor mule

Mules are the easiest and quickest slippers to put on and take off. Mule refers to the backless convenient design that is perfect for wearing indoor. They date back all the way to 12th Century Vietnam, and it is thought that originally backless slippers were used to prevent the rich sultans’ concubines from escaping. Their soft, thin soles made it difficult for women to escape across the rocky terrain that surrounded the harem.

Today’s mules are available in many different materials and often referred to as bedroom slippers. From luxury leather to terrycloth designs that are found in hotels, these simple slippers are easy to slip on and are very convenient for nighttime bathroom trips.

 Outdoor mule

Mule is a word that is derived from ‘mulleus calceus’  which referred to the purple or red slip-on shoes that ancient Roman senators wore.

Today’s outdoor mule is much more robust than the indoor version, and features a hard-wearing, chunky sole and slightly raised back. This slipper has been adapted to wear outdoors and is often fur or fleece-lined to provide extra warmth and has very good traction when it is wet or slippery. Choose a non-slip rubber sole and leather upper for footwear that is easy to wear and quick to slip on.

Slipper boot

Traditionally, slipper boots were made out of sheepskin. People have been wearing them for at least two thousand years. Their history can be traced all the way back to the polar region’s Inuit people, in addition to evidence found in Russia, Greece, Tibet, and China.

They evolved once again during World War I, when sheepskin flying boots were designed by Major Lanoe Hawker and then made by Harrods. These thigh-length, warm flying boots were called fug boots and became very popular among aviators who during their missions needed to keep frostbite under control.

These days, you can find these snug slipper boots with either outdoor or indoor soles. However, it is probably best to use them in the garden or at home, unless you happen to be an Australian surfer trying to warm your feet up after a winter surfing session in the ocean.

Novelty slipper

Of course, everyone loves to display a bit of humor and personality in their wardrobes, but usually, novelty slippers are not designed for style or comfort.

A classic case of form over function, the main aim of novelty slippers is to entertain pets and children. With not much attention paid to practicality, you will have to be careful that you don’t trip over your very own feet when you are wearing this type of slipper around your home. If you need to wear them, do it on a quiet afternoon while you are on the couch watching Christmas movies with your children or grandchildren.

Slipper sock

For men who don’t like slippers but need a bit more traction than what socks can provide, your toes will be kept warm by slipper socks while also preventing you from sliding across a polished floor.

Slipper socks lack support and are only suitable for indoor use. They also can be uncomfortable. The raised treads on the socks can press into your soles while you are walking and you will need to put on regular socks and shoes before you leave your house.
