“The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

– Marcel Proust

The eye is a crucial organ that allows people to live the best lives possible. It is there to allow humans to function better, as they get to see what they need to do, where they need to go, and all the other experiences that make life an interesting journey.

However, there are times when people encounter vision problems. Whether it is hereditary, caused by accidents, or have developed through time, it is a situation that is best addressed by visiting the best ophthalmologist in town, for regular routine eye checkups, especially when aged older than 40 years.

See the World Clearly

Blurry vision, itchy eyes, or seeing floaters or flashes can all be signs of failing vision. Having difficulty going around, missing objects, or having difficulty in identifying objects or faces are also indications of problems with sight.

With the modern world now glued to a variety of electronic screens, there are people who eventually suffer from computer vision syndrome and eyestrain1. Apart from that, there are over 350 hereditary eye diseases such as aniridia, color blindness, glaucoma, keratoconus, and retinoblastoma, to name but a few2. In less fortunate instances, people may encounter accidents that damage their eyes.

Much as one would go to the best dentist to attend to their pearly whites, one must also regularly pay a visit to the eye doctor to check on their eye health. Regular eye check-ups are crucial if people want to maintain their eyes’ good health and function. Consultations with an ophthalmologist will help rule out vision threatening and other debilitating eye conditions.

Even with the variety of factors and situations that may reduce one’s vision, it is fortunate that there are learned and skilled professionals who can help care for one’s eyes. Eye care specialists, with the aid of advanced technology, can now help people with vision challenges and provide a way for them to see better again.

If you are one of the people who struggle with the pain or discomfort of failing vision, don’t fret as your condition may be alleviated with the help of a reputable eye care center. Here are some of the top corrective services that will help you improve or regain clear vision:

1. Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking

Keratoconus: When the front part of the eye called the cornea becomes thin and cone-shaped, vision becomes distorted. This is because the irregular shape prevents the light that enters the eye to focus correctly on the retina.

Fortunately, there are novel treatments that can treat keratoconus when diagnosed much earlier. Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking or CXL is a less invasive form of treatment that can make the corneal tissues stronger and reduce the irregular shape significantly.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CXL uses specially made riboflavin eye drops that are applied to the cornea. It is activated by the use of calibrated ultraviolet (UV) light which then encourages fibrils in the corneal layers to cross-link. The cross-linking will lead to more “anchors” that will hold down and make the cornea more stable.

This treatment can be done in a respectable eye care center and usually lasts around 60 to 90 minutes. You will be given a special contact lens to protect your eye after the procedure. Expect some burning sensation on the treated eye but resist rubbing it. Instead, you can take pain relievers and artificial tears with the post op medications prescribed by your eye doctor, to ease your discomfort.

2. Intacs

Another solution to vision challenges is Intacs. Aside from keratoconus, it can also help people with low levels of myopia or nearsightedness.

Approved by the FDA as an alternative to corneal transplant, this medical device can help improve vision by reshaping the cornea and flattening it towards its original dome shape. Intacs are two tiny transparent arcs that are inserted into the middle layers of the cornea.

Before getting Intacs, you must have a detailed discussion with your ophthalmologist to discern if you are fit to have them. The procedure can take place in your doctor’s office and will take less than an hour to be done. While Intacs are designed to be permanent, they can be removed and replaced with alternative sizes and thickness. You will need to have close follow-ups to monitor the healing process but after that, minimal maintenance is needed.

3. LASIK

Refractive eye surgery such as LASIK aims to improve the eye’s ability to focus through cornea reshaping.

LASIK has gained popularity since it was first done in 1990. LASIK stands for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis3 where a flap is created in the cornea using a mechanical device called a microkeratome, or a laser. With the aid of a laser, the next middle layer of the cornea is reshaped to change its focusing power.

LASIK is a procedure that can help correct refractive errors like astigmatism, low hyperopia or farsightedness and myopia or nearsightedness.

It is best to consult with your eye doctor to determine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery.

Beautiful Eyes

For you to see the world better, corrective eye procedures can provide a lot of help. Not only will it make you feel comfortable and at ease with more independant vision, but you will also feel confident to live and enjoy life with your “new set of eyes.”
