We wish we could tell you that creating the life of your dreams is going to be easy. It won’t be. Chances are, it’s actually going to be quite difficult, especially if the vision you have for your life is lofty. This is why it is critical to train in resilience: the capacity to bounce back from hardship and overcome difficulties. Joey Klein, CEO at Inner Matrix Systems, trains high-achievers to manage their emotions, leverage thought strategies, and understand how the nervous system and body contribute to their decisions and actions. In this article, Joey Klein will share his proven strategies for training in resilience to help you achieve the outcomes you desire.
Flight or Fight? Understanding How Your Body Contributes to the Decision-Making Process
An initial emotional reaction is a subconscious reaction to external stimuli. There’s no stopping this one. For example, when a situation is scary, you are going to feel some initial fear. The turning point is recognizing that we do not have to let this initial reaction become our constant state, driving our decision-making process and actions.
The impulsive decisions we make when we are in a fear-based state are not necessarily the best ones for us. The limbic system, the part of our brain responsible for primitive emotional responses, is designed to help get us out of trouble—fast. In today’s modern world, we need to take a step back from our emotional responses to make decisions that will benefit us most in the long term.
Learning to recognize your body’s physical responses to stress can help you to manage your emotions and put a check on your limbic system before it does anything you’ll regret later. Take note if your breath deepens or quickens, your hands clench, your jaw tightens, or if you are having a strong emotional response to a given situation.
Leverage Thought Strategies
To improve our resilience, it’s essential to connect with our sense of purpose or vision. Our vision provides context for our lives, and when we look to the future, it makes our subsequent actions more obvious. To continue to move forward despite obstacles, we must align ourselves with principles that produce a result and get good at practicing and executing it.
Learning to reframe a negative experience as a learning opportunity will help you to have a positive reaction to this experience that will help you work towards your overall goals. Cognitive reframing is a technique that takes practice to learn to view a negative experience in a different way.
When something “bad” in your life happens, take a step back. Ask yourself: What can I learn from this experience to help me in the future? What changes can I make to how I am doing things in my life that will help me grow and achieve the goal I have set for myself?
Don’t be so hard on yourself for your mistakes. For example, you wouldn’t call a child a failure for falling off her bike; you know she is just learning as she goes, and that falling was an essential part of her learning to find her balance.
When Life Hands You Lemons
Resilience, at its core, is an absolute commitment to your vision. Recalibrate, retry, and reframe what some people call failure as just additional data on your quest to fulfill your vision or your journey to fulfill your vision. When you train resilience, you are teaching yourself that obstacles are meant to be overcome and that nothing can truly stand in your way in achieving the outcomes you have named for yourself.
