GeneralHow to Stay Cool in the Heat this Summer

It’s safe to say that Brits love a warm summer’s day. However, with temperatures rising due to global warming, we’re learning what it’s like to live in a country that often sees 32 degrees celsius. If you’ve struggled to keep cool as a cucumber in the warm weather, you’re not alone.

In fact, as a nation, we’re seriously underprepared for extreme heat. If you’re not sure how to keep cool this summer, we’ve compiled our top tips below.

1. Undress

Although working from home completely naked might get you in trouble with HR, you can look to minimise the clothing you’re wearing. Generally, it’s good practice to wear loose T-shirts to keep you cool.

If you’re client-facing and don’t want to be seen looking ‘underdressed’, then at the very least remove your socks to keep your feet cool.

2. Ventilate

Although you may be tempted to open all your windows, curtains and blinds in a bit for some fresh air, you might be making the problem worse.

The best way to ventilate your home is by opening the windows and closing the blinds. That way, you’ll not only get some cool air in, but you’ll keep the sun out.

3. Drink plenty of water

According to the NHS, you should be drinking 6 to 8 cups of water a day.

If you’re not one for an ice-cold glass of water on a hot day, then the good news is that you can keep hydrated with other fluids. For example, low-fat milk, flavoured water and squash can be a great way to quench your thirst when the temperatures rise.

4. Buy a fan

If you’re still sweating as though you’ve just run a marathon, you might want to invest in a fan to keep cool. However, they aren’t the ideal solution.

According to contact lense supplier Lenstore, “Using a fan in hot weather may seem like a good way to cool off, but having air blown into your eyes can cause them to dry out and become scratchy and irritated. The same applies to air conditioning.

If you’re able to, try using a cool, damp towel or drinking cool water to help manage your temperature instead. And if you do need to use a fan, for example, to sleep, avoid having it pointed directly at you so the airflow is away from your face.”

5. Eat for the weather

As well as hydrating well, you should also look at your diet. When the weather is cooler, things such as salads are excellent as they not only keep you full but hydrate you too. As many salad staples (such as lettuce, cucumber and celery) have high water content, you’ll be rehydrating your body as you eat a tasty meal.

So, next time you find yourself amid a heatwave – don’t panic! Simply follow the above steps and you’ll soon be thriving in the heat.
