HealthcareHow to Keep Your Winter Skin Looking Healthy

When winter is closing in, you can be prepared for what is coming – the chapped lips, the dry and flaky skin, the endless moisturizing that you need to put yourself through to survive the cold season. Suffice to say, winter is not a fun season for our skin at all.

Short of getting a facelift, we share some tips to keep your skin looking good throughout winter.

Choose the Right Skincare Products

During all other seasons, you are free to choose any skincare brands and types that you prefer. Winter, however, is a little different.

You may want to avoid anything with alcohol content in it for your skincare routine in winter. Alcohol tends to dry out your skin, which is the last thing you need for the cold, dry air in winter.

Keep an eye out for alternative ingredients which will dry your skin a little less, such as witch hazel. If you want something a little permanent, you can also go for skin laser treatments to fix any post-winter damage.

Wash with Warm Water

There’s no doubt that hot showers feel exceptionally good during this cold season. However, hot showers will clean the oil layer from your face, exposing your skin to more damage.

Try to use lukewarm water when you are washing your face or your hands to keep the oil layer intact. This way, you can prevent your skin from drying out further.

Moisturise Immediately After Shower

Your skin feels damp after a shower, right? The key to using moisturisers is to trap as much of the moisture as you can, which you can do by applying moisturiser immediately after your shower.

Keep your moisturiser in your bathroom, and apply it right after you have dried yourself off with a towel. When you use your moisturiser in this way, you can retain the post-shower dampness in your skin for longer.

Use a Humidifier

Your moisturiser will help you to retain water in your skin when you’re outdoors. You can build up the same effect indoors by using a humidifier.

Humidifiers work best in winter because they can add some moisture to the dry air to make it a little more bearable for your skin. If you already know that you are going to spend most of the winter days in your bedroom, why not invest in a humidifier that will come in handy every winter?

Dress for the Winter

When we talk about appropriate articles of clothing for winter, we are not just referring to thicker, warmer clothes. Winter clothes also refer to clothes that are not too rough or irritating to the skin – such as clothes made from wool-like materials.

During winter, our skin will turn flaky. As a result, it starts to get a little itchy.

Materials that are irritating to the skin will cause your skin to itch even further, which is why you should opt for soft and light undershirts before you put the warmer layers on top.

Eat Foods with High Water Content

Come winter season, come the hot cocoa, hot tea and other hot beverages. Try to eat more foods or snacks with high water content as well to ensure that your body is getting all the water that it needs to stay hydrated!

Ensure your water bottle is filled and with you for the day on the office. These indoor office environments can be very dry during the winter season.

Take winter skin foods a step further by ingesting fruits and snacks with high vitamin C and zinc content, both of which helps to produce more collagen and elastin to keep your skin looking smooth and supple.
