GeneralCrucial Reasons to Wear Hearing Protection

Any sound carrying over 85 decibels can damage the hearing and long exposure to these loud noises can cause serious long-term damage that only gets worse over time; so, protecting your ears is an important part of protecting your hearing from these damaging noises.

There are multiple activities that can endanger your hearing, perhaps more than people realise, thus wearing some form of protection is a must. And even though we are all different and have different sensitivities, you should consider wearing ear protection if you’re involved in activities that could inflict damage to your ears.

Here are some activities that require ear protection:

  • Noisy work environments (e.g. construction)
  • Using power tools
  • Gardening (e.g. using leaf blower and/or lawn mower)
  • Sporting Events
  • Concerts
  • Jet skiing

As it can be noticed from the list above, these are regular activities that an individual will or has engaged in at least once. Having ear protection should be considered prior to engaging in such activities to avoid future hearing issues and maintain ears healthy. Looking at the aforementioned list, one might still ask: “Is it really necessary?”

Hearing loss is becoming more common and a high percentage of it is caused by exposure to overly loud noises; in most cases this end result could be preventable if people chose to protect their ears and the following reasons will highlight why ear protection is really necessary.

Hearing loss cannot be fixed

Normally, hearing loss is irreversible! Eardrums cannot heal themselves, so once there is damage by now wearing the adequate ear protection, there is no way of fixing it! Granted, technology has developed ways to ensure those with such problems are provided with some form of assistance or even certain treatments, however there is no guarantee hearing will be restored nor that hearing aids will provide you with the same level of hearing.

Hearing loss fosters other problems

Mental and physical health can be deeply affected by hearing loss. You might experience a lack of balance, develop tinnitus and other painful and/or irritating ailments. As communication becomes difficult, some may experience depression and a lack of confidence which has a deep impact on ones mental health.

Prevention is cheaper than Treatment

Treating a hearing issue caused by loud noises will cost more than simply buying the appropriate protection for the activity. Audiologists recommend investing in ear protection to avoid feeling tempted to go without, additionally it is far easier and cost effective to invest in prevention and keeping your ears healthy than remedying the problem.
