General5 Things You Need to Stop Doing if You Are Struggling with Infertility

Infertility is not easy to live with. It can be an issue arising due to PCOS or cervix problems in women or poor quality of sperm and pituitary gland disorders in men. Infertility is quite a common problem in our country. According to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), around 12-18 million couples in India suffer from infertility. And, it should be noted that this is not restricted to females, the infertility due to male is also in a large proportion. Here’s what you should NOT do at all if you’re struggling with infertility.

1. Feeling embarrassed and blaming yourself

Everyone’s body is built different. Some couples might be able to conceive in the first try, some might not be able to conceive even after trying IVF. You should not let infertility take a physical as well as a mental toll on your body. So, stop comparing yourselves with the couples who have been able to get pregnant and just try to the extent to which your mental and physical health can endure. And, stop blaming yourself. Finding a reason to blame the infertility on yourself will only put you in depression. Infertility is not predictable or preventable, so don’t blame your past actions or habits. Move forward and embrace reality.

2. Making getting pregnant your only task

Infertility won’t go away if you try to follow the two weeks rule for conceiving or make getting pregnant your priority. There are multiple ways to conceive such as IVF or surrogacy. If you try too hard to conceive, it will surely take a toll on your everyday life and take away your mental peace. Don’t make getting pregnant the centre of your world, life must go on, try to learn to live with it.

3. Smoking and drinking

If you really want to do something that might be beneficial, stop smoking and try to reduce or cut alcohol consumption. Smoking can cause serious implications before as well as during the pregnancy. Alcohol consumption beyond the recommended levels can increase the chances of infertility in both men and women. So, it is highly advised by doctors to stop smoking and drinking if you’re trying to conceive or are pregnant.

4. Eating unhealthy and non-balanced diet

Eating food that is providing you with a balanced diet is really necessary if you want to increase your chances of fertility. A good diet will include wholegrains, unsaturated fats, multivitamins, proteins, and carbohydrates. Your diet is very crucial before or during pregnancy. It is highly advised that if you’re suffering from infertility, try to improve your diet or consult a dietitian for a proper diet chart that can help you improve your chances of fertility.

5. Trying everything that someone suggests!

As you go through the infertility phase people around you will come up with plenty of advices that they’ll call tried and tested methods to remove infertility. Don’t try everything you hear! Even after trying multiple methods and improving your lifestyle, if you’re not able to conceive, it’s time that you consult a doctor and try the medical ways to conceive properly. Trying something that has not been clinically tested can cause harm to your physical as well as mental health.

These are the 5 things you need to stop if you are struggling with infertility. Don’t go by the societal notion of a healthy family which states that having a child is the only way to complete a family. You can adopt a child and give them a home. Get a dog, adopt a child, and live a happy life as a family, infertility is not the end of your life.
