HealthcareTreating Common Dermatology Conditions

Dermatology is an aspect of medicine that involves the treatment, diagnosis and research in matters related to the skin, as well as nails and hair. The word comes from the Greek word for skin – derma – and the expression to flat – logia. Treatments for dermatological problems can be in the form of cosmetic therapy, radiotherapy and laser therapy.

The medical professional who deals with dermatology is a dermatologist. They can offer medical or surgical treatments and can offer their patients a wide range of services including various cosmetic treatments such as hair removal, phototherapy and even tattoo removal.

One advantage that a dermatologist has over other doctors is the fact that the skin, being the largest organ in the body, is entirely visible, and a direct examination is easy for them to do.

There are all types of treatments available to patients depending on the type of dermatological issues and their severity. There are lots of common dermatology conditions that people all around the world can suffer from. Many of these can heal over time, while others may need some more extreme forms of treatment.

One of the most common dermatology conditions is acne. It is an extremely common skin disorder, and is something that a high percentage of teenagers will suffer from. It is not restricted only to young people, and there are a number of adults who suffer from acne.

Acne is generally caused by hormonal changes in the body when youngsters reach puberty. It is the result of hair follicles being blocked and the oil glands of the skin.  There are several different forms of acne such as papules, which are red spots caused by blocked hair follicles, pustules, that are red spots with a pus filled top, and nodules which are spots that lie underneath the skin and which can be pretty painful.

Acne is generally treated by creams or in some cases, prescriptive medicine. If you suffer from acne, then you get it checked by a dermatologist who can provide you with the best form of treatment. Left unattended, acne can result in scarring and permanent marks on the skin.

The products you daily implement in your daily skincare routine are key in keeping aces under control. Using harsh chemical soaps can cause even more irritations and imbalance your oil levels which leads to having even more acne-prone skin. Implementing natural cleansers such as aloe vera face washes and anti-acne goat milk soaps will help you remove impurities and extra oil, as well as restoring your skin’s Ph levels naturally.

Another very common condition is hives, which are itchy red welts that can be very painful and annoying. These can be brought on by a range of different causes such as insect bites, medication or even a reaction to some types of food. There are many food allergies, such as rich dairy products or shellfish, which can bring about such a reaction. If you find yourself with an outbreak of hives, you should really try and speak to a medical professional.

If it is a weekend or late at night, and there are no doctors available for you to visit, then you should try to find an online dermatologist consultant, who can give you a consultation and suggest a course of treatment.  Of course, nothing would beat visiting an actual dermatologist where you should contact a local dermatologist for instance who can give you a proper examination, but when this isn’t possible, then getting online will be your next best option.

One skin condition that many people will suffer from is sunburn. Exposing your skin to high levels of ultraviolet light from either the sun or a sunlamp can cause a lot of pain and suffering. Sunburnt skin will be very painful to touch, and if you have it all over your back or front, then you can have some problems trying to sleep.

You should never be exposed to the sun for long periods of time, and if you are away on holiday in a warmer climate, you need to be reapplying sun lotion to your skin every couple of hours, regardless of if you are being burnt or not. Sunscreen will protect your skin against the damaging rays of the sun, and can stop you from having serious problems in the future such as skin cancer.

If you find that you have suffered from sunburn, you should take a bath or shower with relatively cold water, and a mild soap or lotion. If the sunburn is very bad, you can apply a burn cream to the worst areas. One other important thing to do is to make sure you stay hydrated. Drink lots of water or fluids, but try to avoid alcohol if you can.

Your skin is sensitive and needs constant care and protection. If you believe that you are suffering from any type of dermatologic condition, then you should try to seek professional advice, whether it be in person with a dermatologist, or via an online consultation.
