PharmaSelf-Medication. When Is Self-medication Acceptable?

For most people, self-medication means completely avoiding medical care and using self-medication when your health deteriorates. Official medicine allows home therapy tactics, but only under certain conditions. This kind of treatment is only possible with mild under-medication. Only over-the-counter medications can be used. The main rule, which everyone should realize for themselves, is that there is no such thing as an independent therapy. In this context, we mean pre-hospital care, which must necessarily be accompanied by a subsequent visit to the health center at the place of residence and a consultation with the family doctor. Today, with the support of medicalbrandnames, I will tell you how not to make yourself worse.

Types of self-treatment at home

Before practicing home therapy, the patient needs to adequately assess his or her condition. Every adult should correctly identify his or her clinical symptoms. And also based on this information, make the right decision about therapeutic tactics and the selection of medications. It is very important to determine the cause of the worsening of your well-being so that in the future you will be able to prevent the occurrence of an unforeseen situation.

If the sensations you are experiencing are new to you, it is better to seek medical help immediately. In other words, home therapy is acceptable only when the person clearly knows what his symptoms are related to and is able to choose the necessary medications to neutralize the symptoms.

Types of conditional home therapy:

Medication therapy. Assumes a competent selection of necessary drugs for different conditions: poisoning, headache and migraine, high and low blood pressure, asthma and allergic attacks, sunburns, colds, etc. The basic rule – it is important to know what drugs to use and in what dosages.

Providing first pre-hospital care in case of unforeseen accidents: burns, dislocations and fractures, cuts, blows, abrasions, swelling, bleeding, insect bites, and so on. Depending on the situation, a person should be able to apply a tourniquet to stop the blood, treat the wound with the necessary antiseptics, bandage the affected area, apply the necessary products for local application and wait for medics to make a diagnosis and further treatment.

For a temporary treatment at home, over-the-counter medications with minimal toxicity would be suitable. The technique of using such remedies should not require the participation of medical workers. In other words, give anything intravenously or intramuscularly without a doctor’s permission is not allowed. If you have not been previously recommended such a tactic by your doctor, you should not do it.

In your home medicine cabinet, you should always have medications such as:

  • antipyretics;
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
  • analgesics and antispasmodics;
  • sorbents;
  • antihistamines;
  • wound treatment and disinfectants (peroxide, ammonia, iodine, chlorhexidine, etc.);
  • panthenol;
  • diclofenac;
  • pills for angina pectoris, lowering blood pressure;
  • absorbent cotton, bandages, sterile wipes, plasters, thermometer, and tourniquets to stop bleeding.

Before taking medications, it is important to consider their compatibility with other medications. In addition, you should not become a hostage to compulsive advertising and follow other people’s recommendations for taking medications. If for some reason you are unable to consult a doctor, you can ask the pharmacist at the pharmacy for advice.

Which drugs are not acceptable to take on their own:

  • Antibiotics;
  • Hormonal drugs;
  • Prescription medications;
  • Drugs that have a huge list of side effects.

It is not worth resorting to treatment with dietary supplements and phytopreparations. They are not medicines and cannot be used to provide proper medical care. Even if you want to take such supplements, it is better to ask the opinion of your family doctor.

Is it better to see a doctor?

Resorting to experimental treatments at home increases the possibility of side effects and worsening your well-being. Any sudden change in the state of an adult, especially after the age of 40, such as localized pain or dyspepsia (nausea, feeling of heaviness in the abdomen), is a reason to see a doctor.

There are several main groups of symptoms that should not be ignored, thinking that it will pass: any loss of consciousness or fainting spells, any bleeding, in particular rectal bleeding, blood from the genitals in women outside the menstrual cycle, blood from the nose. Particular attention should be paid to acute abdominal pain, which does not go away after eating or going to the toilet. It may be accompanied by single vomiting, change in stool, and fever. In this case, you can assume the beginning of acute surgical pathology. Another group of alarming symptoms is a pain in the chest area of a burning, compressive nature after physical or psycho-emotional stress, which may indicate coronary heart disease.

The dangers of taking medications incorrectly

Medications taken intuitively may simply not change the patient’s condition for the better, but on the contrary, only worsen it;

The emergence of resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics. When prescribing the drug, the doctor takes into account the entire physiology of the patient (weight, age, height, health status, etc.). It is necessary to choose the right dosage and strictly observe the duration of taking the drug, which is impossible to do at home;

Medications can weaken or enhance the effect of each other;

allergies. When you take a new drug, you cannot know whether you are allergic to it or not. If you have such an adverse reaction, the situation can end very badly.

It is unacceptable to self-medicate for women in pregnancy and nursing mothers. Also, children and the elderly are more susceptible than others. This requires a smaller dosage of medication and a doctor’s supervision. You should not resort to herbal therapy either, as this type of treatment can be very dangerous and requires obligatory consultation with a doctor.

There is no need to test your health because it is the most precious thing we have. Often people ignore official medicine and ask their neighbors, internet forums, and folk healers for advice. Practice shows that nothing good can come out of it afterward. Such behavior leads only to serious complications and a protracted course of the disease. If you feel uncomfortable, it is better to take the necessary measures of pre-medical care, and then immediately go to the doctor.
