Health ITInterview With Dr. Christoph Moellers On Beckman Coulter’s DxA 5000 Total Laboratory Automation Solution

Beckman Coulter, the global leader in clinical diagnostics, announced the launch of DxA 5000, a revolutionary automation solution designed to enable laboratories set a new standard for turnaround time. We conducted an interview with Dr. Christoph Moellers, Beckman Coulter’s Vice President & General Manager, Automation, to learn more about their work.

Who is Beckman Coulter?

Beckman Coulter is committed to advancing healthcare for every person by applying the power of science, technology and the passion and creativity of our teams to enhance the diagnostic laboratory’s role in improving healthcare outcomes. Our diagnostic systems are used in complex biomedical testing, and are found in hospitals, reference laboratories and physician office settings around the globe. Beckman Coulter offers a unique combination of people, processes and solutions designed to elevate the performance of clinical laboratories and healthcare networks. We do this by accelerating care with a menu that matters, bringing the benefit of automation to all, delivering greater insights through clinical informatics and unlocking hidden value through performance partnership. An operating company of Danaher Corporation since 2011, Beckman Coulter is headquartered in Brea, California, and has more than 11,000 global associates working diligently to make the world a healthier place.

Can you tell us more about Beckman Coulter’s DxA 5000 total laboratory automation solution?

In today’s healthcare environment laboratories are highly focused on enhancing patient care by driving faster turnaround time, delivering quality results and improving the laboratory operations. The DxA 5000 helps laboratories meet these challenges though a collection of patented innovations that deliver unparalleled rapid and consistent turnaround time, provide a new level of comprehensive pre-analytical sample quality detection, and reduce the number of manual processing steps to significantly improve the laboratory efficiency.

What are the advantages of introducing automation and reducing manual steps in clinical diagnosis?

With an intelligent automation system you can significantly reduce the turnaround time of samples. This becomes very important for hospitals facing the challenge between productivity enhancement and stat capability. The innovative sample quality detection system of DxA 5000 allows better quality outcomes for the patients by identifying up to 70 % of potential pre-analytical errors like short draws, incorrect sample material or incorrect sample labelling. In addition reducing manual steps in the laboratory allows the limited qualified staff of a laboratory to focus on the most critical challenges of patient care.

How do you see the laboratory automation solution industry in the coming 5 years?

5 years ago automation was available only for very large laboratories, that were able to afford this significant investment. Pre- and post-analytical automation will become more and more important also in smaller entities to allow them to enjoy the benefits and standardization of sample processing. The automation of data management, also known as informatics, will play an integral role in the whole automation process of laboratories. As a consequence, automation plays a key role in the success of future laboratories and we strongly believe in bringing the benefits of automation to everyone.
