Are screens benefitting toddlers – or are they impairing their development? Gone are the days when parents of toddlers could rely on them to entertain themselves with toys and games – now, many young children spend hours each day glued to screens, whether it be watching cartoons on TV or playing interactive games on a tablet. As useful as technology can be in keeping our little ones amused and stimulated, there’s no denying that spending long periods of time in front of a screen can have both positive and negative effects on behavior and learning development. Language Development

Toddlers learn through interactions and experiences; however, screen time can prevent those critical learning opportunities. When children are watching videos or playing games, they are missing out on the interactions necessary for language development. It would be unrealistic to eliminate screens entirely from a toddler’s life in today’s world. However, it is the responsibility of parents to establish a healthy balance between screen time and real-life experiences. Toddlers need plenty of opportunities for physical activity, social interactions, and language development to ensure they develop into healthy, well-rounded individuals.

In conclusion, it’s important to bear in mind that technology is not an inherently evil force. Used appropriately and in moderation, screens can be a great teaching tool for toddlers and benefit their language development, social and emotional intelligence, and problem-solving skills. However, taken to the extreme or used as an easy fix for pacifying an unruly child, overuse of technology can be detrimental to toddler development. Thus it is essential that parents remain mindful of both the positive and negative impacts screens have on their toddler’s development by setting consistent expectations and boundaries around screen usage. Establishing a healthy balance between time with technology and time engaging in physical activities, forming meaningful relationships with family members without screens present, and developing hobbies are key steps in making sure your little one develops properly in this technologically saturated world.
