In his revolutionary new book “Health Care: Compassion In Action,” author Greg Gallivan reveals how artificial intelligence will fix the problems that caused the rise in administrative duties introduced in the past that made it impossible for doctors to have the time necessary to properly practice medicine. The change forced the end of individual practitioner private practice and caused the need for medical doctor groups to be formed, which Gallivan believes fractured the patient-doctor relationship, leaving patients without viable options for getting the care they need.
But Gallivan also believes the problem can be solved quickly and completely. His innovative solution, which aims to lower costs while increasing the quality of care, begins with unleashing the power of artificial intelligence in healthcare. While many people would prefer knowing their doctors in advance of when care is needed as a patient, many doctors would also prefer to be able to practice medicine as individual practitioners. Gallivan feels artificial intelligence will help reduce the need for group practices while increasing the opportunities for doctors to be successful in private practice.
“AI will permit doctors to be doctors again,” Gallivan states in his book. “Doctors will only have to concern themselves with being the best doctors they can be.”
How artificial intelligence can help transform the healthcare industry
Gallivan is a New England-based healthcare policy author, public speaker, and insurance industry expert dedicated to advancing a more accessible, affordable, and compassionate healthcare system. With a background in pre-medical studies and years of experience as a licensed health insurance broker, he brings firsthand insight into the challenges patients, providers, and insurers face.
In “Health Care: Compassion in Action,” Gallivan presents a practical vision for transforming American healthcare through three steps focused on technology, education, and cooperation. The first step involves using AI-powered tech to alleviate healthcare burdens, especially those related to medical insurance billing and coding.
“Decades ago, substantial increases in malpractice premiums coincided with new billing and coding requirements that changed the landscape of medicine,” Gallivan writes. “The new billing and coding requirements made it prohibitive for doctors to stay in solo practice. The amount of time required to act as the administrator for all the billing and coding requirements did not leave enough time in the day to still properly practice medicine.”
Doctors who had been running individual practices were forced to form groups to manage the high fees charged by third-party billing and coding companies. Profit, and not patient outcomes, became the priority at that point. As Gallivan puts it, “medicine has become absolutely about money instead of the heart.”
AI will improve patient care and reduce healthcare costs, Gallivan says
“Health Care: Compassion in Action” lays out a revolutionary plan for transforming the global healthcare system. Using AI to make care more accessible, affordable, and effective is a central component of the plan.
“In two years, what artificial intelligence will be able to do is unfathomably difficult to understand,” Gallivan writes. “This is especially true in regard to just how game-changing artificial intelligence will be in the field of medicine, specifically in relation to how our medical and surgical experiences will be enhanced.”
Gallivan envisions a world in which AI enhances every aspect of healthcare, from documenting procedures in real-time to sensing patient needs and automatically scheduling appropriate patient care. And AI’s advanced capabilities will ensure that these things are done accurately and securely, Gallivan says.
For doctors and other healthcare workers, unleashing the power of AI means freeing up more time to treat patients’ current health issues and promote preventive health practices. As that shift takes hold, Gallivan sees a reduction in the amount of waste and fraud experienced by hospitals, which will ultimately lead to a more efficient insurance industry and, potentially, the removal of underwriting divisions from insurance companies.
“Artificial intelligence will streamline all patient care models individually, reduce fraud and waste, resulting in a massive reduction in health care costs and possible elimination or drastic decrease of medical underwriting divisions,” writes Gallivan.
Why rescuing healthcare requires implementing an à la carte insurance plan
AI plays a key role in the transformation Gallivan envisions for healthcare, but it is not the only change that needs to be implemented in the insurance industry. He also believes it is critical to have an à la carte insurance model that does not force families into rigid plans that do not consider their actual needs.
“Each family and person needs to be able to choose what health insurance coverage works best for that person and their family in tiered concierge à la carte insurance programs,” Gallivan says in his book. “These are inventive program initiatives that encourage each family to design their own health coverage that works for each and all individuals in the family.”
Gallivan says introducing a tiered system that offers multiple options at each tier should not only allow costs for care to be associated appropriately but also allow underwriting to be carried out in a cost-effective manner that permits better competition in the marketplace. As that happens, he says each company in healthcare will be able to thrive financially.
“Health Care: Compassion In Action” provides a much-needed roadmap for change that promises to reshape America’s struggling healthcare system in just two years. To kickstart that change, the healthcare industry must leverage AI in ways that bring the efficiency and personalization necessary to do so.
“By utilizing AI, patients will have customizable individual care models that fit them for the person they are,” Gallivan writes. “All aspects of care will be facilitated for every patient. Money will be saved by the patients, hospitals, insurance companies and pharmacies. Doctors will be permitted to earn their worth as individuals. The benefits will be reaped by all.”
