TravelHow to Choose the Right Travel Insurance Plan

Taking out travel insurance before travelling is like a security blanket for if anything unexpected happens whilst on holiday. To save you facing huge bills or being stranded in a foreign country, it’s important to have the right insurance that covers you for any emergency. Here, we talk you through how to choose the right travel insurance plan and how to make sure your policy covers everything you might need based on your age, medical conditions and type of holiday.

Know Your Medical Conditions

When taking out travel insurance, especially over 50’s travel insurance, it’s important to know and declare any pre-existing medical conditions that you are living with. Certain medical conditions may drastically increase your premium with some travel insurers, however it’s important to be honest here as failing to do so could invalidate your policy. If your insurer checks your medical details with your doctor in the event of a claim and you haven’t declared your conditions, you may not be covered. You can check exactly what medical conditions the travel insurance covers in the exclusion section of the policy. Here will outline any medical conditions that the policy won’t cover.

Cover For Annual or Single Trips?

If you’re planning on taking multiple trips throughout the year, it’s recommended that you take out annual travel insurance cover. Doing this can help you save a lot of money! When taking out annual travel insurance, it’s worth checking the number of days that the policy covers. If you’re planning on travelling for a few weeks, some policies may only cover a certain portion of that so it’s worth looking into a backpacking policy. If you’re just planning the one trip in the year, then a single cover for that holiday should be sufficient.

Check What Your Cover Includes

Certain travel insurance policies, like rental car insurance, are very specific in what they do and don’t cover. For example, if you’re planning on doing some higher risk activities during your trip like skiing, snowboarding, horse riding etc. may not be covered and may cost extra to cover. Most of the normal activities that you do on holidays like kite surfing will usually be covered, but it’s worth checking out the exclusions in case you’re the thrill-seeking adventurous type! Certain policies also only cover certain parts of the world. So, if you’re travelling around the world, make sure to look at worldwide covers and avoid those that are limited to just Europe.

Compare Policies

Don’t just buy the first insurance policy that you see, shop around and compare different policies to get the best deal on the best cover for your trips. However, it’s important to note that certain words, phrases and even locations may differ across policies so make sure to check the definitions in the document. What counts as a winter sports holiday to one insurer may mean something different to another, and what classes as Europe for one may mean something different for another.
