Good eyesight is essential for most day-to-day activities, and one of the best ways to ensure you maintain healthy vision is to make sure your diet consists of the right foods that promote eye health. Your diet plays a critical role in your overall health, and certain types of food have a specific positive impact on your eyesight.

From leafy-green veggies to nuts and fruits, eating the right foods can help reduce the risk of developing common conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy.

Dark green leafy vegetables

Dark green leafy vegetables are a great source of essential nutrients and dietary fiber. In addition to these, some veggies in particular contain lutein and zeaxanthin that help protect cells in the eyes from damage caused by free radicals. Kale, on the other hand, contains beta-carotene that helps reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Other vegetables that are beneficial to your eyesight are broccoli, Swiss chard, spinach, and collard greens.

Nuts and Seeds

Almonds, walnuts, and chia seeds are all known to have great health benefits when consumed, not the least of which help with supporting good eyesight. Nuts in general contain Omega-3 fatty acids, along with antioxidants, zinc, and vitamin E -all of which contribute greatly to reducing the risk of age-related eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. In addition, nuts and seeds are also a tasty source of vitamin A, a very important component in helping our eyes see in the dark.

Eggs

Besides being great on toast, eggs, it turns out, also do wonders for the eyes. Eggs are an excellent source of vitamins A & E as well as zinc and lutein; all of which work together combined to protect vision health. Egg yolks in particular are a rich source of zinc and lutein, two nutrients that play an important role in promoting good eyesight.

Fruits

Whether eaten as a salad or taken fresh as is, fruits make a great addition to any well-balanced diet. Fruits are naturally high in antioxidants which help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD)  and cataracts. A really good example of this is blueberries and citrus fruits like oranges or tangerines as they contain vitamin C – an important nutrient for keeping eyes healthy.

Proper Hydration and Rest

Finally, staying hydrated and getting adequate rest are essential for maintaining good vision health. Water helps to keep the eyes moisturized and lubricated, reducing dryness and irritation that can cause strain on your eyes. It also helps to flush out toxins from your body, which can improve your overall eye health. Drinking plenty of water daily will help to protect your eyes from damage caused by environmental factors including dust, dirt, and air pollutants. In addition, getting adequate rest also promotes healing and recovery from damage and exposure. To maintain great overall health, get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep daily.
