Braces are used widely in orthodontics treatment (an area of dentistry that is used for treatment and prevention of condition that concerns the alignment of teeth and jaw.
Traditionally, braces were metal contraptions that were uncomfortable and painful to wear because of the injuries that were caused by the braces inside the mouth. But nowadays, they make braces using plastic, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials which makes them obscure.
Types of braces
Braces are also available in two forms lately, –
Fixed: which are worn permanently by the patient until the prescribed time and only dentists can remove them.
Removable: these are braces that patients can take out if they want to as per their requirement.
Procedure:
Orthodontics is a long-term process, and a patient applies braces of at least 2-to-3 years depending on their situation. This treatment takes place in phases and there are three phases involved, which are:
- The placement of braces in which they attach brackets along with an archwire to hold the braces in place.
- They adjust the braces at regular intervals until they achieve the desired alignment.
- After removal of the braces, we wear a retainer to stabilize the teeth.
There are certain things you need to know before going for braces.
Do you need it?
The first thing one needs to be certain about is if there is a requirement for braces. One needs to understand that the application of braces and the entire treatment is a complex process and takes a long time, so be certain about the requirement before opting for this treatment.
Get your orthodontics record
Get your dental records that are provided by your local orthodontist which include details about your treatment, where the brackets will be placed and how will your teeth look after the treatment is done. These records are very significant because this record will provide you with clarity about your treatment.
Brushing and flossing your teeth can be a task
After getting your braces done so, you need to know the best way to brush or floss your teeth. The best way is to remove all the removable parts like elastic, or bands and then brush your teeth. Make sure that you also wash the removable parts properly before reapplying them.
Myths
There is a myth involved with braces that one will have to eat pureed or bland food after braces. No, you can eat everything just with certain restrictions. You can eat fruits or vegetables which are soft or to a softer texture. Avoid eating nuts, seeds, or whole grains because they get stuck in the braces. You must avoid candies or any sticky food because they get stuck in your braces.
Loose brace
A loose brace also seems scary to some patients, but it’s nothing. As soon as you realize that there is a loose brace or some other issue, all you need to do is contact your dentist and they will proceed.
Conclusion
